6. CITY OF NAMUR > The capital of the Wallonia Region and of Sustainable Development.

17 569 hectares.
109 113 inhabitants.
Main road, rail and river hub.

Objectives

Located at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre, capital of the Walloon Region, and a city that dates back two millennia, through its urban landscape and its heritage Namur exemplifies several major milestones in the history of cities in Western Europe, as well as the trade and urban-social phenomena that characterize them.

The city is a political, commercial and local housing centre, a strategic military position, a resort and tourism destination and a modern, growing urban hub. These features represent a series of challenges to be managed and a host of identities to be reconciled for the municipal authorities when planning the life of the community and its heritage policy.

Aware of the climate issues and the need to curb urban sprawl, the city of Namur is to complete several projects whose main objective is sustainable development (urban regeneration of the city’s ecodistricts near services and amenities, heritage conservation, etc).
