Doubling the size of the City :

Mons, a city that is both lively and welcoming, is also an important administrative, legal and academic centre, located at the heart of a region consisting of 25 towns and communes which together form a population of over 500,000 inhabitants.

The city has a strategic geographic location situated on the European corridor where the Paris-Lille-Amsterdam and London-Brussels-Cologne axes meet.

Mons bears the marks of its long history and today possesses a unique charm and xceptional cultural heritage. It prides itself on counting four masterpieces listed as world heritage sites within its borders.

That’s not to say that Mons is a museum city! In fact, in recent years, the city has consolidated and developed its role as a big draw on the commercial, entrepreneurial, cultural and tourism levels as well for technological innovation.

Proud of our historical centre, we are doubling its area by a contemporary extension, that will accommodate more than a thousand housing units.

More than 150 hectares have been made available to investors to implement large-scale programmes, such as a business district, residential housings, the largest shopping centre in Benelux, an economic and technological campus and a leisure centre.

Moreover, we pay particular attention to our economic growth and stimulate the concretization of ambitious projects such as office or housing buildings as well as commercial areas. Proud of our heritage, we do not hesitate to promote contemporary architecture. Ikea, Primark, Decathlon, H&M and many other brands have recognised the city’s major advantages and have now relocated to Mons, which has a catchment area of over a million people.

Considerable effort has also been made in these last few years to improve the commercial attractiveness.

An incentive fund has been created to encourage new businesses to set up along the commercial routes of the city centre. What’s more, the city is investing massively in the purchase of empty commercial buildings in order to renovate them and put them back on the market as commercial incubators.

The city of Mons is also developing a proactive policy for population growth. To achieve this, a good amount of greenfield land has been put to work to develop qualitative accommodation programmes right next to utilities, services and shops.

Mons is a city that is looking to the future. Its Digital Innovation Valley has already attracted companies such as Google, Microsoft, IBM and more, and the INITIALIS Science Park brings together dozens of companies specialising in new technologies such as biochemistry,

telecommunications, civil engineering and information technology and includes two research centres built with the assistance of the University of Mons, UCL/Mons and European Funds.

So that your investment approach can be a personalized experience, and to guarantee rapid and effective administrative follow-up, the City of Mons has put in place an “investor welcome body”, which will support you in the different stages of achieving your project.

We are delighted to welcome you to our city.
